As well as things to see and do in
Armagh itself, you may like to take the chance to explore other places.
One of Northern Ireland's most interesting day trips involves the north
(Antrim) coast, where possible places to see are the Giant's Causeway (a
formation of hexagonal, basalt columns extending into the sea), Dunluce
Castle, the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge and the Bushmills whiskey distillery
(UK regulations mean you must be 18 years old or over to go on the distillery
tour).
Belfast has been a city of great industrial and economic success,
in particular during the 19th and early 20th century when it became
Ireland's pre-eminent city for industrial activities such as linen, rope-making
and shipbuilding (for example, the Titanic was built in Belfast).
This history is still visible in the large number of Victorian and Edwardian
architecture buildings today.
Unfortunately the city suffered greatly during the period of conflict called the Troubles,
but has recently undergone spectacular economic growth and development with the success of the
peace process and the Good Friday Agreement (1998).
Last year,
the national Ulster Museum reopened after years of renovation,
displaying an impressive collection on the history of Ireland, natural history and art.
Other things to see in Belfast include the city centre, the university, Botanic Gardens and guided touristic bus tours
along murals and areas of conflict during the Troubles.
Other places around Northern Ireland include
Carrickfergus Castle, the City of Derry, the Mourne Mountains, the Glens of
Antrim, and the Marble Arch Caves. The Republic of Ireland is also full of
places to see. Hiring a car is the best way to travel around.
